Danfoss: Predictive Maintenance Strategy Consulting

About

Summary

Collaborated with Danfoss to analyze barriers to predictive maintenance adoption and deliver strategic insights under real-world disruptions. Adapted to a mid-project client and scope change by re-prioritizing deliverables and producing a targeted market entry strategy within a limited timeframe.

Overview

As part of Babson’s MBA Consulting Experience, our team collaborated with Danfoss, a global leader in engineering solutions, to develop a strategic approach to increase the adoption of Predictive Maintenance (PdM) across industrial sectors.

While initially scoped to include customer barrier analysis and value proposition development, the project evolved in response to real-world organizational changes, a challenge we navigated through adaptability and collaborative problem-solving.

Original Scope of Work (SoW)
  • Identify barriers to predictive maintenance adoption

  • Explore high-potential industries for PdM growth

  • Develop a Strategic Mitigation Framework addressing customer concerns

  • Create a Value Proposition Strategy aligned with Danfoss’s strengths

Challenge & Impact

Real-World Challenge & Pivot

Midway through the project, we encountered two major challenges:

  1. Team Change: A teammate dropped out early in the project, which reshaped our internal workload distribution and communication rhythm.

  2. Client Disruption: Our point of contact at Danfoss changed due to internal restructuring. This led to a significant pivot in scope, requiring us to shift focus midstream and realign deliverables under time constraints.

How We Handled It:

  • Held a scope realignment meeting with the new client lead

  • Consolidated previous research into an adapted Value Framework & Market Matrix

  • Focused on producing an executive-ready Strategic Insight Report within 3 weeks

Final Deliverables

  • Customer Barrier Analysis (partially completed before pivot)

  • Industry Attractiveness Matrix – assessing PdM readiness

  • Refined Go-to-Market Recommendations for prioritized sectors

  • Client-facing Summary Deck synthesizing actionable insights

Key Learnings & Impact

  • Consulting Resilience: Learned to adapt strategy, scope, and communication in response to unplanned client-side disruptions

  • Strategic Thinking under Pressure: Delivered valuable insight within a shortened timeline

  • Cross-functional collaboration: Maintained team performance and morale despite restructuring
